Developer: Squaresoft
Genre: RPG
System: SNES
Introduction: Even though this game was released just about 10 years ago, this game is still one of my all time favorites. This game is about two sides going at each others throats, The Light Dragons and The Dark Dragons. In the beginning, The Dark Dragons sets The Light Dragons village on fire and the General of them, Jade, takes our hero's (Or named Ryu like in the GBA version) sister away when she challenges him to a fight. Our hero then decides to go out and fight against the Dark Dragons, traveling through many cities and continents, and gaining partners along the way.
Graphics (10/10): Let's keep in mind that this was when the SNES reigned supreme over all the other systems so the graphics were beautiful and still are, or at least they are to me. The over view of the party walking looks like the same of other RPG's but when a battle gets started, the monsters and demons look somewhat real. The characters pictures on the status screen are amazing. Everything is just wonderful in this game... villages look like real villages... no other SNES game can beat it.
Audio (9/10): The music for this game was excellent. The music always had the right mood for when you entered a town or if a bad event happened and stuff like that. The enemy music and boss battle music were just classic, as was the final boss music. The only reason I gave it a 9 was because after you get halfway through the game, the music changes and it gets really annoying to hear over and over again while you're walking around. But other than that, the sound was just perfect.
Content (10/10): Beginners to this game wouldn't understand the concept of the plot. I think that the plot of this game is one of the best ever. Sure, it may be one of those common "Light VS. Dark sides" but there's more to it. Also, the storyline involves helping out characters who will soon be your partners meaning you actually have to work to get the people to join your party. What's also great about this is that you have a mix of friends in your party. You have a woman with wings, a thief, a half snake woman, a mole, a fish, a wolf, a ox, and a boy who can change into a dragon. This game shows diversity showing that not every RPG partner has to be human.
Gameplay (10/10): The controls on this game are so simple that even a 9 year old can learn them in ten minutes. It's just like the buttons for other RPG's, "A" confirms an attack, "B" cancels an attack, "Select" brings up the status screen, etcetera. Also, the battle system for this game is nice. It's not like Final Fantasy in which the enemy gets to attack before you can make a choice. It's more along the Lufia lines of a turn-based system. None the less, the battle system is easy to figure out and it's not always so predictable. That's what I love about the fights in the game.
Overall (9.5/10): Overall, this is one of my favorite games of all time. It's not just my favorite for the SNES, but out of all the games/systems out today, it ranked number two on my favorite list. (Chrono Trigger is number one mind you.) I really suggest going out and finding this game if you haven't played it yet or don't have a ROM for it. There's also Breath Of Fire II for the SNES as well but I recommend playing Breath Of Fire I first before playing the second one so you can see what the game is like. This game is a must-have.
